As representatives of the royal family,Northern Wei dynasty princesses belong to special group of northern Wei dynasty society that deserves our further research.so this paper that based on Historical Records?local chronicle and inscriptions such as the book of Wei dynasty and Northern History will explore the group.First,it discusses the title process of princess from its appearance in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period to its establishment in the Western Han Dynasty,also establishes the first titled princess-Liaoxi Princess,who is the daughter of TuobaShenyijian in Tuoba Department.According to the evidence of historical records and epigraph,the title in the Northern Wei Dynasty has two forms,one is titled in terms of award of emperor,the other is titled in terms of family name of one's husband.Second,the princess in Northern Wei Dynasty includes daughters of emperor and daughters from the emperor's brothers families,which inherits convention from Han dynasty.However,XianbeiTuoba Department makes a precedent that conferring princess on the daughters of princesses,for example,Wuwei Princess in Northern Wei Dynasty inherits the title of her mother-Wuwei Princess.So based on the princess system of Han dynasty,the rank in Northern Wei Dynasty has some changes more or less,the princesses in Northern Wei Dynasty mainly are shire princesses as well as county princesses and village princesses.On the one hand,the princesses have their own attached officials that equipped with seal and its silk ribbon.In addition,the death of the princesses was called Hong,which was used to describe the nobility and means higher political status.On the other hand,we can draw a conclusion from their political participation that the rights of the princesses have three origins: paternity,authority of the husband and matriarchy.Though the status of the princesses is much higher than their husbands' in their marriages,their marriages were more like political ties that involved with the political aim of the rulers and the background of emperor's son-in-law.The study of princesses' marriage is aim to reveal their love and education to their children.It also included analysis of the princess' divorce and remarriage.the author access relevant information and the local literature,analyzing the causes of the phenomenon of posthumous title after the death of the princess and the reasons that therulers of the Northern Wei Dynasty built a temple for Huayin princess,as well as expounding the problems that Chengxin princess and Yongtai princess of the Northern Wei Dynasty became monks and current situation of the Princess Temple and the Yongtai Temple,and analyzing the inscription of Sitong princess which having been discovered.
