Listening Comprehension Difficulties In French-Chinese Consecutive Interpretation And Its Coping Strategies

Listening comprehension is a crucial part of interpretation.Without good listening comprehension,it is impossible to guarantee the quality of interpretation.However,it is also a difficult part of interpretation.Due to the immediacy and inter-disciplinarity of interpretation,interpreters often encounter various types of obstacles in listening.This thesis starts with the concept of listening comprehension and the related theories,then takes 2019 First Global 5G Telecommunication Forum Mock Conference as an example to analyze and summarize the listening comprehension difficulties that appear in the French-Chinese interpretation.There are four types of difficulties in this regard: recognition of word meaning in a specific context,structure analysis of long phrases,inadequate discourse logical analysis,and insufficient background knowledge.In response to the above difficulties,this thesis proposes strategies before and during interpretation.Firstly,to actively mobilize semantic prediction,interpreters can make prediction under specific contexts and from the views of speakers;secondly,interpreters need to consciously expand the unit of listening comprehension,take in the meanings of large sections rather than fragmented words or phrases;thirdly,interpreters need to focus on extracting key words of the main parts of sentences,pay attention to logical relative and indicative informations,and the first and last sentences;finally,interpreters need to carry out targeted pre-interpretation preparation to minimize the burden of on-site listening comprehension.In addition,the flexible use of the above strategies is also inseparable from interpreters' linguistic knowledge accumulation and abundant training.Hopefully this thesis can provide useful enlightenment and reference for French-Chinese consecutive interpreters to deal with difficulties in listening comprehension.
