With the rapid development of politics,economy,culture,science and technology,the speed of globalization is accelerating.As a global language,English plays an important role in the education system in China,especially in the stage of compulsory education.Grammar teaching has always been a hot and difficult point in English education.Middle school is the bridge between primary school and high school,so grammar teaching is very important in junior middle school.Grammar is the internal rule of language.The purpose of learning language is to communicate.Grammar is the foundation of communicative ability.Therefore,from the point of view of communicative language teaching theory,this thesis makes a comparative study on the grammar exercise design of the textbooks in junior middle school.The author makes an analysis on the two sets of textbooks---Go for it and Shandong Education Press Edition from the presentation of grammar points,the distribution of grammar points and the types of grammar exercises.The data of the two sets of textbooks are collected,compared and analyzed.In addition,in order to get the feedback of the effect of using the two sets of textbooks,the author designs two questionnaires specifically for the users of textbooks---teachers and students,and then takes back and analyzes the questionnaires.And this thesis mainly answers three questions:(1)What are the grammar points and their distributions in the two sets of textbooks?(2)What are the categories of grammar exercises in these two sets of textbooks?(3)What are the effects of using grammar exercises in these two sets of textbooks?Through the research and analysis,the author finds that:(1)In terms of the presentation and distribution of grammar points,the grammar points presented in Go for it and Shandong Education Press Edition are basically the same,and the grammar points in two sets of textbooks are presented in the way of induction.Both sets of textbooks have set up separate grammar sections to present grammar knowledge in a systematic and explicit way in order to help students have a more comprehensive grasp of grammar points of each unit.Both sets of the textbooks avoid the centralized distribution of grammar points in the past,which makes the presentation process of grammar knowledge from simple to complex,from easy to difficult and they all avoidthe presentation of grammar points that violates students’ cognitive law and language learning law.In addition,grammar knowledge is combined with other language skills such as listening,speaking,reading and writing so as to cultivate students’ comprehensive ability in language learning.(2)As for the grammar exercises,both sets of textbooks involve mechanical exercise,meaningful exercise and communicative exercise,and both of them emphasize meaningful exercise,while the exercises about communication and pragmatics are less.In the grammar exercises in Go for it,communicative exercises are more than that in Shandong Education Press Edition.Compared with Shandong Education Press Edition,Go for it stresses more on the communicative purpose of language learning and the cultivation of students’ communicative ability.(3)From the questionnaire,it can be seen that students and teachers are not very satisfied with the textbooks they use.They have many opinions and suggestions on the design of grammar exercise,and hope that the textbooks can be improved to some extent.The teachers think that the types of grammar exercise in the textbook should be distributed evenly,and should not only focus on form and meaning exercise and neglect communicative exercises.Students suggest that there should be a variety of grammar exercises in the textbook,and more grammar exercises should be designed to facilitate daily communication activities.Although the research in this thesis is of certain significance,there are still some limitations in the research methods and the scope of investigation.The thesis is expected to be improved in the future research.
