English homework is not only an important part of English teaching and learning in junior high school,but also an indispensable link in English teaching and learning.It is a natural extension and supplement of English classroom learning.It is a test of students? English learning,and it is a concrete manifestation of students' ability to think and solve problems.The role of homework is so important,but in practice,teachers' attention to English homework is insufficient.At the same time,the design of the types of English homework has not received much attention,causing students to gradually lose interest in the homework and thus fail to achieve the expected teaching effect.Based on the improvement of meta-cognitive ability in junior middle schools,this paper studies the following three problems:1.What types of English homework are helpful to cultivate the meta-cognitive ability of junior high school students? 2.What are the principles and methods for designing these types of assignments? 3.How does these types of English homework affect students' meta-cognitive ability based on meta-cognitive theory?Students not only need to gain the knowledge and skills,but also need to understand the meaning of learning and the learning methods,which promotes students to obtain learning ability and competitiveness.This goal requires students to understand the content and method of English learning.In other words,students need to have meta-cognitive ability.Meta-cognition can promote students to take targeted learning methods and strategies,make appropriate learning plans,and take appropriate improvement measures on the basis of understanding their learning styles and learning preferences,so as to realize the healthy development of learning and cognition.In this process,we have cultivated the subject consciousness of junior high school students in learning English,strengthened their enthusiasm,independence and creativity,found a practical and feasible way for the development of their independent learning ability,and helped to realize the educational ideal of "teaching people to fish",so we have cultivated the meta-cognitive ability.As an important part of the students learning after school,the English homework can play an essential role in cultivating students meta-cognition.This paper explains the connotation of English meta-cognitive ability in detail,and then discusses the structure of English meta-cognitive ability.It further divides English meta-cognitive ability into two dimensions: awareness of individuals' cognition activities and ability to monitor cognitive activities.Combined with these two dimensions,the author designs three kinds of English homework:class report,mind map and English inquiry homework.Two classes of grade seven in a middle school were selected for a four-month teaching experiment.In the experiment,the control class adopts the traditional assignment mode,and the experimental class adds the above three new assignment types.In addition,the experiment includes two questionnaires and one interview.After that,the author used Office Excel 2010 and IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 software to carry out descriptive data analysis.The conclusions of this study are as follows: Based on the meta-cognitive ability training,the types of class report,mind map and inquiry homework not only improve the students' awareness of individuals' cognition activities,but also improve the students' ability to monitor cognitive activities,so as to improve the students' meta-cognitive ability.This study provides a new way to improve the types of English assignments in junior high school.However,because the samples used in this study come from a certain grade of a middle school,and the number of research samples used in this study is not large,so the research results need more and more comprehensive research to confirm and test.
