As an important portion in the process of junior middle school English teaching,English homework is not only the consolidation and extension of the classroom teaching,but also an important channel for teachers to check the realization of teaching objectives and to understand the students.Subsequently,homework makes it easier for the teacher to locate the deficiencies of the teaching and to work out ways of teaching improvement.The “English Curriculum Standards for the Compulsory Education”(2011)decides that the overall goal of the English courses in the compulsory education is to enable students to form their comprehensive language ability,to promote mental development and improve comprehensive humanistic qualities through English learning.The overall goal cannot be achieved by only relying on the classroom teaching,thus homework is an effective assistance for the purpose.Therefore,based on the existing problems in the English homework design in junior middle school,the study proposes principles and methods of English homework design,and provides some guidance for English teachers in homework design with the help of actual case analysis,aiming to arouse the attention to and interest of the study of homework design.Hopefully,this in turn will improve the quality of homework design and the effectiveness of teaching and learning.Based on the research results at home and abroad,the study takes “English Curriculum Standards for the Compulsory Education”(2011),Multiple Intelligence and the ZDP theory(Zone of Proximal Development)as the theoretical basis.The author selects three ordinary junior middle schools in Xiping,Henan Province to collect English homework,and then conduct questionnaires in English teachers and students of the three junior middle schools.Through the analysis of homework text and questionnaire,this paper makes an in-depth survey on the problems existing in junior middle school English homework.This paper proposes four research questions:1.What are the problems existing in junior middle school English homework design?2.What are the causes of the problems of junior middle school English homework design? 3.What should be the principles in the design of homework in junior middleschools? 4.How to design quality English homework for junior middle school students?The survey finds that junior middle school English homework design mainly has the following problems: the unreasonable amount of homework increases the student's academic burden;the single form of homework and the undiversified content reduce the students' interest in English learning;the “instrumentality” of the homework overshadows the cultivation of the students' comprehensive language ability and consequently students' comprehensive humanistic quality is ignored;the same level difficulty of the homework ignores the differences among students.In view of the existing problems,this paper analyzes the causes of the problems in English homework design from the perspectives of students,teachers,parents,examination evaluation system and the relevant provisions of homework.The principles and methods of homework design based on relevant theories are suggested.
