Late qing dynasty is in a critical period of social transformation in modern China,for the reaction of the outsiders tend to be more sensitive,so when introduced into China as an important component of western civilization of the Catholicism,based on the differences between the eastern and western cultures and other interests they carried,the contradiction between Catholicism and Chinese society in late qing dynasty produced almost inevitable conflict,and some measures had been adopted in order to solve the conflict.The study of local governance issues is always able to directly reflect the course of such social changes.Therefore,this paper attempts to take jinan region in the late qing dynasty as an example to analyze the influence of Catholicism on local governance through the following four parts.The first part introduces the formation of the Catholic concept and after it was introduced into China in the context of the traditional culture of the late qing dynasty national view of the image as one of the Christian religious factions,the Catholicism in the western world and eastern orthodox protestant distinct from other religions,but in China,due to differences in cultural context,the connotation of the Catholicism have experienced the process from Christianity to Catholicism.Religion and society are closely connected,interpenetrating and influencing each other.Catholicism was introduced to Jinan in the late Qing Dynasty,and its religious image and corporate image played a unique role in the process of local governance.The second part introduces the social situation of Jinan in the late Qing Dynasty and the localization strategies and missionary methods adopted by Catholics to spread and develop in Jinan.As the capital city of Shandong Province,Jinan area was strategically located and densely populated,and it still had the educational foundation left by previous missionaries to carry out missionary activities,which was conducive to the further development of Catholic missionary activities.On this basis,Catholic missionaries actively promoted the localization of Catholicism,and carried out missionary activities through charity and school establishment.The third part introduces the influence of Catholicism on the politicaldevelopment of Jinan.After the Catholicism was introduced to Jinan,due to the difference between the value system and the local value system,there was some conflict with the local public gentleman.The awakening of local people's gentlemen's awareness of rights such as pursuing fairness and justice and safeguarding local interests.In addition,due to the local privileges of the Catholic Church,local governments consulted with the central government when dealing with related issues in order to avoid rising to become a diplomatic issue,resulting in low administrative efficiency.The decentralization of power has expanded the scope of local governance.The fourth part summarizes the influence of Catholicism on the development of public utilities in Jinan.It mainly includes some suggestions and measures for the development of local economy and education.
