As an important part of thinking ability,critical thinking ability is the ability to find,analyze,evaluate,reason and solve problems.With the continuous advancement of the global new scientific and technological revolution,China attaches great importance to the training of innovative talents.As an instrumental language,English plays an important role in China's participation in the process of globalization.Therefore,it is particularly important to cultivate innovative foreign language talents.In the 2017 edition of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools,the proposal of English core competences emphasizes that the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability is as important as language learning.High school is a major turning point in students' growth and development.This stage is undoubtedly a key period to cultivate students' knowledge and exercise their mind and thinking.Therefore,from the perspective of the core competences of English subject,the author tries to break through the shackles of traditional English teaching concepts,methods,and raises appropriate effective teaching strategies to cultivate and improve students' critical thinking ability.This study is mainly conducted from the following three aspects:(1)What is the critical thinking ability under the core quality of English subject?(2)What is the relationship between the core competences of English and critical thinking ability?(3)How to guide teachers to train students' critical thinking ability?This paper adopts the methods of literature research,questionnaire survey and interview to explore how to improve students' critical thinking ability under the core competences of English subject.By consulting and collating literature,the author defines the core competences of English subject and critical thinking ability.Then,by the questionnaire survey,the author learned that the overall level of students' critical thinking ability in L school of Hanzhong was not high,and the interview of teachers revealed the deficiencies and difficulties in the process of cultivating students' critical thinking ability.Combined with the survey results,this paper analyzes the mainproblems and influencing factors in the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability in L school.Finally,combining the teaching practice and the core quality of English subject,the author tries to give the corresponding cultivation strategies.The author thinks that teachers should create a loose space for students' critical thinking and a dynamic critical class,enrich students' thinking system with theme and interdisciplinary teaching,encourage students to be masters of the critical thinking class in the process of cultivating students' critical thinking ability,and then gradually improve the level of high school students' critical thinking ability.
