Since oil is an important energy resources necessary for the development of modern industry and economy and its price acts as a critical indicator for major international raw materials in global market, the translation of oil-related texts inevitably plays an essential part in global trade and communication.Hand-on practice proves that Function equivalence theory can be employed to promote the standardization, systematization and efficiency of petroleum translation. As it is,with Function equivalence theory, the author has successfully completed her translation practice of the Chapter 4,5 and 6 of The oil factor.Meanwhile, the principle of loyalty, one of the key principles of function equivalence theory,is found to be the most directive guidelines in petroleum translation. This report summarizes and analyzes some specific problems encountered in the author’s petroleum translation practice from lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. Finally, the translation techniques adopted in the translation practice are reported by means of illustrations, which include interpretation, transliteration, word order adjustment, reorganization,to name just a few. This report consists of four parts.Chapter 1 introduces and analyzes the source text and target language readers.Chapter 2 describes the translation process in three parts, that is,Pre-translation,In-translation and Post-translation proofreading.Chapter 3 explains how the Function equivalence theory has been adopted to guide the petroleum translation from lexical, syntactic and layout dimensions.Chapter 4,which is the last chapter of this report, mainly summarizes whole translation process and points out some shortcomings for further improvement in the future.
