Based on the researchful perspective of cognitive linguistics and the theory of image schema, this paper uses metaphorical and metonymic theories to comprehensively and systematically analyze the process of semantic generation of the non-prototype "Chi+NP" predicate-object structure in modern Chinese. The article divides the "Chi+NP" predicate-object structure into a prototype structure and a non-prototype structure. It points out that the non-prototype structure includes the non-prototype representing the "eating event" and the non-prototype representing the"other events",then, the article examines the role of metaphorical and metonymymic mechanisms in the formation of these two types of structures. The full text aims to make more detailed answers and predictions to the research questions such as the semantic understanding controversy caused by these two types of structures in the linguistic world and the mapping from semantic to syntactic generation. The full text is divided into five chapters as follows:Chapter 1:Introduction.Firstly,this paper introduces the reasons for the topic, defines research object and research content;Secondly,it reviews, sorts out and comments on the development history and overall situation of the predicate-object structure related to the research content of this paper. It affirms the research results, finds out the potential problems, explains the existing achievements and deficiencies to provide the topic ideas and exploratory space for this paper.Thirdly, the innovation points of this paper are explained, the theoretical and practical significances of the topic are expounded. Finally, the research methods and corpus sources are pointed out.Chapter 2:Theoretical basis. This paper introduces the core content of metaphor and metonymy from the cognitive perspective. As far as metaphor is concerned,it mainly involves the definition, conceptual and systematic characteristics of metaphor. As far as metonymy is concerned,in addition to the basic content such as the definition of metonymy,it also puts metonymy at the level of sentences for analysis. From the interaction between metonymy and syntactic structure, the contextual factors that affect the realization of metonymy, the relativity of the syntactic explanatory power of metonymy and the dominance of contextual regulation are reflected. At the end of this chapter,it points out the mutual example of metaphor and metonymy, puts forward the concept of image schema, which is the basic element that affects the formation and operation of them, and then explains the construction of image schema on the meaning of metaphor and metonymy. The combination of image schema, metaphor and metonymy can constitute a network framework for the dynamic generation of cognitive meaning. All of these have made the necessary theoretical foundation for the development of the research on the non-prototype"Chi+NP" predicate-object structure.Chapter 3:The cognitive semantic analysis of the non-prototype "Chi+NP"predicate-object structure representing "eating event".This paper makes a case/cases study on the cognitive basis of the displacement of locative and implemental components from the normal adverbial central position to the verbal object in the scene of "eating event".The research shows that the non-prototype "Chi+NP(location/implement)" predicate-object structure der:ived from displacement is attributed to the metonymic operation of these two types of semantic roles. The conceptual proximity of the location/implement case and the "food" of the subject case is the cognitive cause of their occupying the objectal position. While revealing the mechanism of structure-generated metonymy,The interaction between metonymic productivity/restriction and syntactic semantics, the pragmatic control of the temporary suppression of metonymic restriction by context are also illustrated respectively. At the end of this chapter, the concepts of self-sufficiency,semi-self-sufficiency and virtual self-sufficiency are proposed based on the above case(s)analysis including locative object and implement object, then, the changing mechanism of self-sufficiency's degree that promotes structure formation and development is explained from the perspective of "preconception".Chapter 4:The cognitive semantic analysis of the non-prototype "Chi+NP"predicate-object structure representing "other events".The meaning connected mechanism of the verb "Chi" extending from the prototypical meaning to the extended meanings, the phenomenon that the object "NP" change in the reference objects and reference attributes under the semantic restriction of the extended verb"Chi" are discussed in this paper. It is found that the derivation of the verb "Chi"follows the general cognitive rules and principles, the spatial motion schema is the legendary representation of the prototypical "eating event",the extended meanings of"Chi" used to integrate the non-prototypical "other events" are based on the dynamic coherence of the schema system, the similarities between the highlighting of specific stages in the eating activity and the processes triggered by the concealment of other stages are the extension of the rationale. Therefore, the meaning connected mechanism of "Chi" is the thinking operation of metaphor.Under the guidance of the metaphorical meanings of "Chi",the object "NP" have undergone the referential transfer and attribute meanings change within and outside the domain. The semantic frameworks of verb "Chi" object "NP" and "Chi+NP" predicate-object structure are also constructed in turn.At the same time, this paper further refines the essential expression points of process similarity,it analyzes the similarities and differences between the conventional and unconventional predicate-object expressions representing the same event with examples.Chapter 5:Conclusion.This paper summarizes the full text and points out the direction of future research should further.
