A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Textual Cohesion In The Merchant Marine Survivors Of World War ?(Excerpt)

Cohesion is an important concept in the framework of systemic functional linguistics and it is mainly used for text analysis.Cohesion links isolated sentences and paragraphs and constitutes a semantically fluent and readable text.English and Chinese belong to different language systems,in which the use of cohesive devices is also different.Therefore,in the process of translation,it is necessary to study the respective devices of cohesion and the difference between them to achieve proper conversion.The author selects Marine Survivors of World Warll written by Michael Gillenas as the translation materials.This text belongs to maritime oral history,which is characterized by vivid images and great stories,and the cohesion plays an important role in it.The discourses with obvious cohesive elements in the text are systematically sorted and classified by the author according to the ways of grammatical cohesion,lexical cohesion and punctuation cohesion.On this basis,the most representative discourses are extracted for case analysis,and the translation methods of discourse cohesion are analyzed under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan's textual cohesion theory.The conclusions of this paper are as follows:textual cohesion includes not only grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion in textual form,but also punctuation cohesion in auxiliary textual form.The translation methods of textual cohesion are flexible and varied.For grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion,the translation methods include reservation,ellipsis,repetition and conversion of source language.For punctuation cohesion,the common used translation methods are conversions,including zero conversion,conversion to other punctuation and conversion to language.In text,various cohesive devices are methods while discourse coherence is the ultimate goal.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to find the instructive role of cohesive devices for discourse coherence in the practice of translation.In addition,the selection of texts also has certain reference significance for the translation of maritime documents.
