| In recent years,studies of metaphors in news discourse have received great attention,among which those in politics and economics are the most popular.However,other discourses such as science and technology receive relatively smaller attention.On the basis of Conceptual Blending Theory,the thesis collects the data of metaphoric science and technology news headlines from the Tech & Sci section of CGTN(China Global Television Network)ranging from July,2018 to December,2018 and attempts to study the distribution of different metaphors,reasons for this distribution and the process of meaning construction of metaphors in the metaphoric science and technology news headlines.Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are conducted and the results can be concluded as below:(1)The major types of metaphors in CGTN science and technology news headlines are personification,war metaphor,journey metaphor and container metaphor respectively.Compared with metaphors in other types of news discourse,the relatively high proportion of container metaphor is a special case in CGTN science and technology news headlines.(2)The distribution of different metaphors in CGTN science and technology news headlines is mainly influenced by three factors: the international audiences of CGTN,the relatively fixed subjects of science and technology news headlines and the unique characteristics of science and technology.(3)The meanings of metaphors in CGTN science and technology news headlines are manly constructed in two steps: interaction between input spaces on the basis of similarity and conceptual blending in blended space to form a new structure.The thesis conducts a detailed analysis of metaphors in CGTN science and technology news headlines,hoping to provide some suggestions on how to employ metaphors in science and technology news. |
