| With the amazing development of science and technology as well as China’s entryto WTO, cross-cultural communication becomes more and more frequent, cross-culturalcommunication cannot be separated with the informational transmission. Therefore,news translation plays a significant role in the transmission of news information. Due tosuch characteristics of news as timeliness, importance, prominence, locality and interest,cross-cultural news translation is required to not only maintain these characters, but alsocorrectly express the meaning of the original news information, which makes newstranslation confronted with a great challenge.Science and technology (ST) news translation is a purposeful action. Because greatdiscrepancies exist among different languages, cultures, and ideologies, it is hard for thenews translator to translate the source text in a literal way. Sometimes it cannot achievethe ideal effect of information dissemination if the news translator is completely loyal tothe source text. This report, guided by the three rules of Skopos theory (the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the faithful rule), by analyzing the author’s summer online STtranslation project of the China Daily inews endeavors to probe into the translationstrategies of English ST news. This report is of great significance to improve the qualityof E-C ST News Translation.Through the completion of the translation project and the case analysis, this reporthas the following findings: Under the Skopos rule of the Skopos theory as a guidance,news translators can use translation strategies such as literal translation with annotation,abridgment and adaptation; under the coherence rule, the translators can use translationstrategies such as division and conversion; under the fidelity rule, the translators can usetranslation strategies such as literal translation to well achieve the purpose ofinformation dissemination. ST news translation should help the readers to understandthe target text, so the translator should make the source language transform to the waythat target language readers could understand. So it requires the translator to translate with the coherence rule as well as faithful rule, mean while, reasonable vocabulary andsyntax adjustment are also needed.The findings of this report will hopefully shed some lights on ST news translationas well as some other types of news translation. By applying the above translationmethods, the news translator might effectively fulfill the purpose of informationdissemination and therefore improve the quality of news translation. |
