With the development of globalization, the relationships among countries are getting much closer, which leads to the increasing number of diplomatic activities.Since the convening of the 26 th General Assembly of the United Nations in 1971,China's foreign affairs activities have increased gradually, which also brings an increased demand for foreign affairs interpreters.Chinese scholar Liu Miqing divides the context of interpretation into two kinds: the presence context and the absence context, which can also be called dual context.Based on the dual context that proposed by Liu,the author finds that many interpretations are more or less influenced by the absent context, which may lead to some misinterpretations. In addition, after reading a lot relevant literature, the author finds that relevance theory in pragmatics can be used to solve problems in interpretation. Therefore, the author holds that the corresponding solutions can be given by analyzing the impact of the absent context on interpretation, such as addition, omission, literal translation, etc. Thus, this research will quote a number of interpretations from the annual Chinese and foreign press conference held by the Chinese government and the speeches of some leaders to explain the impact of the absent context on foreign affairs interpretation, and then further exemplifies a new method adopted by interpreters, that is,to perfect interpretations with the guidance of relevance theory in pragmatics. The author makes several new trials in this study: firstly, this study analyzes the characteristics of the problem, that is,the impact of the absent context on foreign affairs interpretation;secondly, this study puts forward solutions from a new perspective, that is,choosing relevance theory in pragmatics as the theoretical guidance. It is hoped that this study can broaden the thinking methods for foreign affairs interpreters.
