Being the main curriculum resources for English teaching and learning,textbooks become an important knowledge carrier for students.At the same time,they provide teachers with directions to complete their teaching tasks effectively.In 2018,the Ministry of Education promulgated Senior High School English Curriculum Standard(2017),which aims to meet the requirements of the new era to improve the competence of the population and conform to the new trend of quality education.The New Curriculum Standard,which focuses on the English Key Competences,updating the teaching content and developing the standards of assessing academic quality,becomes the primary guidance for the research on English textbooks.In the context of the New Curriculum Standard,the implementation of the New Curriculum Standard and effective utilization of textbooks become the key issues in English teaching,which attracts the majority of teachers' concern and is of great significance to implement the English Key Competence.Based on the New Curriculum Standard(2017),the study analyzes the New SeniorEnglish for China from the aspects of internal evaluation and external evaluation.The internal evaluation of this research,based on the New Curriculum Standard,analyzes New Senior English for China from the aspects of language knowledge,theme context,cultural knowledge,types of the discourse,language skills and learning strategies.The external evaluation mainly conducts a questionnaire survey for teachers and students who have used the New Senior English for China.The survey intents to investigate the current use of New Senior English for China(NSEC)by taking 246 second year senior high school students and 44 senior high school English teachers in Tongliao city as the participants.The specific research questions are as follows:(1)What contents of the NSEC meets the requirements of the New Curriculum Standard(2017)?What does not meet?(2)Does the NSEC respond to the needs of teachers and students?(3)How can teachers use the textbooks effectively and creatively under the New Curriculum Standard(2017)?The results show that the set of New Senior English for China textbooks basically meets the requirements of the New Curriculum Standard as well as the needs of teachers'teaching and students' learning.However,there are still some deficiencies.Different topics and different genres of reading materials are unevenly distributed;some of the contents are outdated and irrelevant to students' daily life;the set of textbooks pay more attention to native cultural knowledge less than to western cultural knowledge;the listening materials do not involve the variety of accents required by the New Curriculum Standard;there is not enough systematic training on phonetic knowledge.Therefore,the author proposed suggestions to teachers from the aspects of improving teachers' comprehensive quality and how to use textbooks creatively in their teaching process,hoping to help them to use textbooks better in their teaching and to promote the process of English curriculum reformation.
