Now English picture books have been employed by many teachers in English teaching at many Primary Schools.As the initial stage of the English learning,this method is good for the pupils when they begin to read the English picture books.However,many English teachers do not know how to use the books correctly at all.If not,it might have bad results.How much do the learners' parents know the English picture book learning? What does the picture book reading teaching bring to the children? Learners' attitudes towards the English picture book teaching.They are very important issues.Through the questionnaire,experimental method and the interview,this study aims to explore the effectiveness about the English picture books in teaching English for beginners at primary school.Furthermore,it discusses the mechanism about learning interest and the humanistic quality in English picture books.In order to make this study more objective,the writer has chosen two classes in Grade 2 as the subjects from the school where the author is working at the moment.The experiment lasted for a whole semester,and the results show that: firstly,the use of English picture books,as a powerful supplement to the current English teaching for the junior grades of primary school,is not normal for many learners at home in daily life.At home,the parents cannot be sure to supervise and urge the learners to cultivate the good reading habit.So the teachers play the vital roles.Secondly,the proper usage about the picture books teaching methods can stimulate students' interest.The mechanism about learning interest in junior grades are: vivid pictures helping to understand and reducing difficulty;rich content,interesting plot,fascinating;expanding the theme vocabulary,improving expression material library;simple and repeated sentences,getting the satisfaction of learning;graphic,text and sound in many forms to stimulate students' desire to imitation and performance.Besides,it could improve the learners' language knowledge and language competence.All these are benefited from this teaching method,which help the learners' vocabulary and sentences learning.Lastly,it could cultivate the students' humanistic qualities.Teaching them how to love the animals,the world,our society and life more and helping the students to know the society which is full of love,to see the world in a kind view,and to raise the ability of love is also the purpose of the research.Yet,there are shortcomings about this study,such as the limitation of choice of sample students,and the choice of research instrument.The subjects came from only two complete classes,and the results based on these might not be very objective,nor representative.This should be improved in future studies.
