The source text of this translation practice is a detective novel which appeals to readers because of its strong sense of logic and suspense. There are three main elements in novels:character, plot and setting, among which character is the soul. The character depiction which promotes the development of plots is the most common expression technique in the novel to portray character images, including portrait, action, speech and mentality. In addition, the translation of detective novels is a kind of literary translation. So the author aims at exploring the feasibility of Skopos Theory in the literary translation. The Cutthroat, the source text of this translation practice,is co-witten by American novelists Clive Cussler and Justin Scott. It's mainly about the tortuous process how detective Isaac Bell and his assistants solved cases. At the beginning,Bell denies dealing with Anna's case, because he thinks that Anna just runs away from her home and she won't be in danger. But with her father's strong insistence,he has to accept it.To Bell's surprise,Anna is found dead and several similar cases come one after another. In order to study the translation strategies with the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author chooses the first ten chapters for her translation practice, and mainly analyzes the translation from the perspectives of portrait, action, speech and mentality.Translation strategies that the author mainly adopted are amplification, conversion, inversion, literal translation and free translation. The thesis consists of five parts. The first is the introduction, which mainly discusses the authors, the source material and the significance of the subject. The second is the description of translation process, including preparations before translation,in-translation and post-translation.The third part mentions about theoretical foundation, which talks about overview of Skopos Theory, rules of the Skopos Theory and the feasibility of Skopos Theory in the literary translation. The case analysis is put in the fourth part.In this part, the author selects character depiction sentences at first, classifies these sentences according to four aspects of character depiction and analyzes these sentences with proper translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory. The last part summarizes the whole process of translation and makes the reflection about her thesis.
