Preparation is crucial to interpreting.Efficient preparation enables better performance of interpreters at workplace.However,as theme and demand of conferences vary,interpreters could possibly encounter challenges while taking specific,appropriate preparation measures.This essay is a case study based on writer's own experience.It first briefly introduces theories in preparation in interpreting,and then describes the Chinese-English interpreting task of a visiting scholar workshop in Fudan University.By analyzing difficulties emerging during interpreting,the essay discusses insufficiencies along advance preparation work in three aspects: theme knowledge,language style of the conference,and terminology.In conclusion,three suggestions are given to improve preparation in academic conference interpreting: 1.Pay close attention to the theme of academic conference and topic-specific knowledge in order to understand the general background;2.Learn special context of academic conference,especially the language style of speakers in advance;3.Carefully study relevant knowledge in both source language and target language while preparing terms. |
