Insufficient Preparation And Improvement

Preparation is crucial to interpreting.Efficient preparation enables better performance of interpreters at workplace.However,as theme and demand of conferences vary,interpreters could possibly encounter challenges while taking specific,appropriate preparation measures.This essay is a case study based on writer's own experience.It first briefly introduces theories in preparation in interpreting,and then describes the Chinese-English interpreting task of a visiting scholar workshop in Fudan University.By analyzing difficulties emerging during interpreting,the essay discusses insufficiencies along advance preparation work in three aspects: theme knowledge,language style of the conference,and terminology.In conclusion,three suggestions are given to improve preparation in academic conference interpreting: 1.Pay close attention to the theme of academic conference and topic-specific knowledge in order to understand the general background;2.Learn special context of academic conference,especially the language style of speakers in advance;3.Carefully study relevant knowledge in both source language and target language while preparing terms.
