A Report On Mock Consecutive Interpreting Of MFA Regular Press Conference

Since the unveiling of the Belt and Road Initiative,China's diplomatic activities are becoming increasingly frequent.It is known that the diplomatic language is different from the communicative languages in common social situations.It is characterized by strong political nature and high policy sensitivity which means higher requirements for the diplomatic interpreters who shoulder the responsibility as important as the spokesperson of government or diplomatic departments.This report is about a mock consecutive interpreting of MFA regular conference from Chinese to English.The author chose the “DPRK Nuclear Issue” related discourse to simulate a MFA regular press conference and accomplished the consecutive interpreting,hoping to experience the systematic working process of the interpreting task through simulating a relatively real one.In this report,under the guidance of Gile's comprehension equation and Zhong Weihe's knowledge requirements for interpreters,the specific examples are analyzed to elaborate various types of difficulties encountered and the countermeasures adopted by the author in this interpreting.At last the author gives a reflection of the whole task and points out its deficiency as well as some suggestions for future improvement in interpreting.In this task,the author finds out the following points: 1.Pre-interpreting preparation of knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge has a positive impact on improving the quality of interpreting because effective pre-interpreting preparation can significantly reduce the cognitive burden of the interpreter during the listening and analyzing,which will provide favorable conditions for higher quality expression.2.As for the pre-interpreting preparation,although under the guidance of theory,the author had prepared for the task from the aspects of subject-related knowledge,glossary,features and prediction of press conference,the author still encounter some barriers in the interpreting due to the deficiency of preparation.After analyzing those deficiencies,the author finds out the collection of the glossary should be classified and the input of related information during the preparation shouldn't be limited to the specific theme of the task but expanded to its superordinate one.3.In the process of interpreting,all kinds of knowledge and skills are complementary to each other.Interpreters should make as comprehensive preparations as possible before interpreting;analyze and react flexibly in the process so as to ensure the quality of interpreting in case of inadequate preparations.
