The annual report is an important form of information disclosure by listed companies.Johnson&Johnson is the most comprehensive and widely distributed manufacturer of health care products as well as provider of health services all over the world,and its annual report reflects the company's operating conditions,assets and liabilities and also income situation.Taking Johnson&Johnson 2017 annual report as the research object,the author hopes to summarize translation skills of English annual reports by translating it.The annual report is written in a formal style,with frequent usage of functional words,such as prepositional phrases.In the practice of translating Johnson&Johnson 2017 annual report,the author takes the Skopos Theory as the guide and follows its three principles,namely,Skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule so as to make a comprehensive summary on the translation method of prepositional phrases in this annual report.On the basis of these translation rules,the author strives to enhance the readability and acceptability of the translation in order to produce a communicative translated text for the target readers.According to the Skopostheory,the author adopts various means to translate the propositional phrases in different contexts in order to convey the information more precisely,clearly and concisely to the target readers.Through this translation practice,the main translation techniques of prepositional phrases employed in the company's annual report are summarized as follows,which are Conversion,Division,Amplification,Omission,Reverse and Negation.It is hoped that the author's research can be helpful to the future translation of similar texts.
