The translation material of this report is the first chapter of The Little Friend written by Donna Tartt,a contemporary American woman writer.The number of English words is about 12,000.The book tells that in a small town in Mississippi,a girl named Harriet seeks the truth of the death of her brother Robin 12 years ago.As the second bestseller of Donna,it is published in 2002,without Chinese version nowadays.In this report,under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator adopts specific translation strategies and methods to solve the main translation problems of character description,social environment description,and culture-loaded words at lexical,syntactic and textual levels,hoping to make the translation readable,fascinating and faithful to original text.This report is divided into five parts.The first is the brief introduction of The Little Friend and Donna Tartt,as well as the significance of this translation project;the second part is the theoretical foundation,which includes the Skopos theory and the three rules;the third part describes the whole process of the translation project,consisting of translation preparations,translation process and post-translation modification;the fourth part analyzes some cases about the translation of expressions,sentences,and discourses;and the fifth part concludes the gains and limitations in the translation project.On the one hand,this translation project aims to show Chinese readers the fascinating story about childhood and crime in the small town of Mississippi,the United States.On the other hand,it aims to offer some help to the development of the translation of bestselling novels,as well as accumulate experience in the translation of best-selling novels.
