After the Imjin War,the rehabilitation works of Ming army which aided the Joseon Dynasty were mainly divided into three aspects:withdrawing troops, remaining troops and investigating merits and demerits of the troops. In the late period of the Imjin War,the Ming army's repeated failures on the front battlefield, the increasing military and economic burden of the Ming Dynasty, and the different understanding of the battlefield situation between Ming Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty made Ming Dynasty want to adjust the military aid and retreat the main force of the Ming army into the country. However, the direct threat from the Japanese army made it impossible for the Ming Dynasty to adjust the existing strategy at that time.Eventually, the Ming Dynasty stopped discussions and decided to win this war. After the war, with the further increase of economic and military pressure in Ming Dynasty, withdrawing troops had become the inevitable choice of Ming army. However, the need for post-war defense made the Ming Dynasty need to remain troops in Joseon. Therefore, the focus of the discussion on the rehabilitation works of Ming army gradually turned to the issue of remaining troops after the war.In order to determine the scale of the remaining troops, there were two discussions at this stage. From the military perspective,Xin Jie and Wan Shide believed that the number of soldiers to stay should not be too small. However, for the Ming Dynasty, which stressed to stop military operations and save money after the war,it was not allowed to leave too many soldiers.Otherwise,it would increase the logistical pressure of the Ming Dynasty. The Joseon Dynasty was worried that too many Ming troops would have a negative impact on itself due to insufficient logistics. The middle and lower level officers of the Ming army, who had no voice in the Ming Dynasty, also expressed their opinions through the Joseon Dynasty because of the hard conditions of staying and the difficulty of logistics, hoping to withdraw their troops as soon as possible.Since each party involved in the discussion had its own interests, the discussion lasted for almost a year. After the first discussion, the Ministry of War in Ming Dynasty made a balance between military demands and economic burden, and completed the formulation of remaining troops. But this program has only a half-year implementation period. In order to discuss the whereabouts of the troops staying in Joseon half a year later,a second discussion was launched between the Ming Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty after the end of the first discussion. In the end, with the initial recovery of the military strength of Joseon Dynasty and the difficulty of logistical supply, all the Ming troops withdrew to the country in 1602,and the rehabilitation works of the Ming army in Joseon were completed. In addition, the successive failures in the late period of the war made the Ming Dynasty dissatisfied with the performance of the Ming army. Therefore, the court decided to investigate the crimes of the Ming army in wartime. However, the end of the war made this issue continue to the post-war,and caused the internal debate in the Ming Dynasty. Finally,in order to ensure the smooth progress of the rehabilitation works, the Ming Dynasty appeased the Ming army who had been fighting hard for several years in the front line. After the investigation, the Ming Dynasty gave a wide range of rewards to the Ming army which participate in the Imjin War,so that the rehabilitation works were successfully completed. How to deal with the rehabilitation works of the Imjin War reflected the multiple games between different political opinions within the Ming Dynasty, and between the interests of the Ming Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty. The constraints of Ming Dynasty's own economic power and the realistic doubts expressed by Joseon Dynasty resulted in the compromise on the issue of the Ming army's rehabilitation works. However, from the fundamental goal of pacifying the soldier's morale of the Ming Dynasty and stabilizing the post-war order of Joseon Dynasty,it is proper to deal with the rehabilitation works of the Ming army. From the perspective of the rehabilitation works,we can also have a deeper understanding of the situation on the Korean Peninsula in the early post-war period, the relationship between the Ming Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty during the war,and the operation mode of the Ming Dynasty's command system.
