An Empirical Study On The Influence Of Youdao Translate On English To Chinese Consecutive Interpreting Quality From The Perspective Of Effort Model

As technology brings tremendous shifts to every aspect of interpreting industry,more thoughts as to the cooperation between technology and human interpreters have emerged,among which the direct assistance with the on-going interpreting process appeals most attention.On this regard,the thesis endeavors to probe into the effects of real-time voice recognition and machine translation technology on English to Chinese consecutive interpreting quality through the introduction of Youdao Translate.The thesis presents a comparative experiment regarding English to Chinese consecutive interpreting in which subjects were asked to interpret both in conventional consecutive interpreting mode and technology-assisted mode.On the basis of Gile's Effort Model,this thesis finds that Note-related Efforts,Listening Effort and Remembering Effort of subjects have decreased significantly under technology-aided interpreting mode.This helped boost the overall fidelity of subjects and reduced the amount of misunderstandings,omissions and additions in the speech production.On the other hand,as the Coordination Effort increased and Proofreading Effort emerged under the new mode,subjects' overall fluency has been undermined,as reflected in the increase of pauses and repetitions in the production.Apart from it,the thesis further probes into the differences between the assistance of English voice recognition results and that of Chinese machine translation results.The research findings suggest that Chinese assistance posed less harm to subjects' fluent delivery,while English assistance played a bigger role in subjects' fidelity.Considering more leeway English assistance offers to interpreters in the production phase,it stands to be more conducive to the improvement of overall interpreting quality.
