The 2017 high school English curriculum standards require teachers to establish the awareness of mutual promotion and penetration of language and culture in teaching.Teachers should pay attention to the differences and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures,understand and treat other cultures correctly,absorb the essence of Chinese and foreign cultures,and actively develop intercultural communication strategies and abilities.As the implementers of intercultural teaching,the intercultural awareness English teachers hold in teaching practice will affect students'understanding of intercultural knowledge directly.Therefore,it is particularly important to improve the intercultural awareness of English teachers.This research uses qualitative and quantitative research methods.It takes 95 English teachers in five high schools in Tongliao as the research object,and uses culture test,survey on intercultural teaching and interview to explore the current situation and the causes behind intercultural awareness of high school English teachers in Tongliao.The study found that the intercultural awareness of high school English teachers in Tongliao is generally weak.The main factors that affect the intercultural awareness of high school English teachers in Tongliao City are as follows:First,Teachers' personal work experience and working environment.Second,teachers lack the motivation to cultivate intercultural awareness.Third,due to the heavy work pressure of high school English teachers and the constraints of the current examination system,teachers lack sufficient time and energy to expand intercultural knowledge.Fourth,teachers lack professional intercultural awareness training.The suggestions of this study to improve the intercultural awareness of English teachers in high schools in Tongliao are as follows:First,teachers should change traditional educational concepts,and establish a correct cultural outlook.Using books and other resources to improve intercultural knowledge system and raise the level of intercultural awareness.Second,school leaders should pay more attention to the cultivation of teachers' intercultural awareness and intercultural teaching,adopting a more comprehensive evaluation method for teachers' curriculum.In conjunction with local universities positively,hire foreign teachers and regularly hold lectures and other cultural activities.Third,Education authorities should provide teachers with opportunities for intercultural awareness training,set up a special fund,and pay attention to the application for intercultural research projects.
