Harlem Renaissance is a turning point in the history of African-American culture,and marks the awakening of African American cultural and racial consciousness.Today,it still has a profound impact on the development of Black culture and the improvement of the self-esteem of the Black,therefore,the translation of the biography The New Negro— The Life of Alain Locke,published in 2018 and awarded the 2018 National Book Award and the 2019 Pulitzer Prize,is of great significance.Based on the translation of Part I of this book,this translation report discusses the syntactic comparisons between English and Chinese from two aspects,that is,sentence structure and sentence order,defines complex sentences,introduces the characteristics of complex sentences in biographic texts,including various sentence patterns,complex sentence structures,complex logic with many modifiers and so on,and mainly focuses on how to deal with complex sentences in the translation of biographical texts according to the above comparisons.Typical examples are selected from the translation to illustrate the main translation strategies employed in the translation practice in different patterns of complex sentences respectively.It is concluded that full mastery of syntactic comparisons between English and Chinese is the foundation of the quality of Chinese translation,and appropriate methods for dealing with complex sentences are indispensable to the translation effect of biographical texts.The report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the task,the practical significance of the task and the layout of the report.The second chapter gives a retrospect of the process of the translation practice.The third chapter introduces the syntactic comparisons between English and Chinese,the definition of complex sentence and the characteristics of complex sentences in biographical texts.The fourth chapter gives quite a few examples of the translation of complex sentences in the material,and analyzes the main strategies that can be adopted in the translation of complex sentences in biographical texts based on syntactic comparisons between English and Chinese,including division,conversion,fronting,inversion,synthesis,etc.The fifth chapter concludes the findings and limitations of the report.
