The original text of this translation report is excerpted from the novel The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke, which won the best nonfiction award of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer biography award in 2018.The author is Jeffrey C.Stewart,a professor of black culture at the University of California. The author chooses chapter four as the translation materials. This book recounts the life of Alan Locke, the father of the Black American Renaissance, including his first black scholar to receive a Roche scholarship,a Ph.D.degree from Harvard University, and the long academic journey that followed. The background of this text is the era of racial division in which African Americans live.Under the influence of the background of the times and family factors,a generation of black writers and politicians represented by Locke was born. The fourth chapter introduces the hero's study experience in Harvard University.During this period,he had excellent academic performance, strict self-discipline,outstanding ability, and made many like-minded mentors and friends. Finally, with his unremitting efforts,he emerged among the white elite students and showed the world the image of the new negro in the early twentieth century. The excerpted materials belong to biographical texts, which are characterized by authenticity, historicity and literariness. Therefore, the translator carries out translation practice under the guidance of Skopos theory. The skopos rule focuses on the purpose of the translation, the coherence rule focuses on the readability and acceptability of the translation, and the fidelity rule focuses on the faithfulness of the translator to the original author.Under the guidance of the three principles, the translator analyzes the contents of chapter four to make the translation more close to the characteristics of biographical texts. This translation report consists of the following four parts: the first part is a brief description of the translation task, including the source of the translation task, the brief description of the translation text and the significance of the project;the second part introduces the translation process, including three parts: preparation before translation, text translation and proofreading after translation;the third part is to analyze the translated text examples, translator select the text examples from many angles, and solve the difficulties in the process of translation under the guidance of Skopos theory;the fourth part is the summary of translation practice.
