The native chieftain system, also namely Tusi system, derived from Yuan dynasty and developed and perfected in the Ming dynasty. In the mid-late Ming dynasty, the Tusi people began to be frequently recruited and invoked as the national strength was growing weaker and in volatile times.A large number of soldiers in the Tusi area governed by the national minority, and which is in Baojing county, were frequently conscripted and invoked to engage in many major military activities of Ming dynasty so that the armed forces in the Tusi area of Baojing county have become an integral part of the national unified armed forces at that time.Ming dynasty was in the late period of the feudal system of China and the feudal system was increasingly declined.Since then,a series of social conflicts broke out,and it directly caused various degrees of riots in different periods and areas of Ming dynasty.Besides, the soldiers from Tusi area also engaged in the war to quell riots.Due to the dual role of internal factors such as the militarism and the policy of "Contain soldier in Farmers" and external factors such as the instability of current political situation and the decline of the garrison system, the Tusi people of Baojing county obtained the opportunity to participate in conscription of the nation. And the super military strength of the Tusi people of Baojing county and their high political identification for the central dynasty were demonstrated in nearly fifty military conscriptions. For example, the frequency they participated showed a trend of gradual increase and the importance they participated were also gradually strengthened in the military conscriptions such as to conquer barbarians and robbers as well as to protect the border, and the military footprint of them was almost throughout the country.Tusi people played different roles in conscription of the nation, firstly, they were regarded as a violent tool of “to conquer barbarians by barbarians” by the Ming dynasty to suppress Anti-Ming struggles from various nationalities in Guizhou province,Szechwan province,Guangdong and Guangxi provinces,Hubei and Hunan provinces,Shenyang of Liaoning province.Secondly, they were regarded as guardians of “to maintain the rule of the Ming dynasty” to suppress revolts from farmers and refugee around Jingxiang,Henan,Szechwan and Hanzhong.Thirdly, they were regarded as soldiers of “to strengthen the authority Ming dynasty”to go China's South-East coastal areas and engage in the righteous war of protecting our homes and defend our country when Japanese pirates invaded and harassed our country. In addition, they also acted as supervisors to defend miao territory for Ming dynasty. It not only maintained the political stability of the Ming dynasty and the unification of the country, but also greatly improved the fighting capacity of the Tusi troops.Thu a new local customs that served war were gradually formed.Meanwhile,we also need to knowthat the economic burden of the dynasty and the people were accordingly increased when the Tusi people of Baojing county were frequently conscripted and invoked. That is to say,the phenomenon of the Tusi people of Baojing county were frequently conscripted and invoked obviously is a sharp double-edged sword for the central dynasty.Just because the central dynasty adopted a series of reasonable policies,so the damage index of the foregoing phenomenon would be reduced to a minimum.
