From Emperor to Citizen is an "introspective" autobiography written by AisinGioro Pu Yi,the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.Since its publication of 1964 it has been published millions of copies, which can be called a super best-selling length-seller,and been translated into more than 10 languages for distribution overseas. The English version is still selling well on Amazon in the United States.Under the background of Chinese culture "goes out",there are only a few domestic researches on such an autobiography, which has been relatively successfully disseminated to the outside world. And all of them are mainly focused on the contents of the source text, instead of the reasons for its hot selling. In the 1990 s,after the "cultural turn",there was a "sociological turn" in translation studies, and more and more scholars tried to solve translation problems with sociological theories.Socio-translation studies emphasize a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of social translation and the various factors that influence it,which coincides with the analysis of the reasons for the hot selling of From Emperor to Citizen. From previous researches,it can be found that there is still a lot of research space for From Emperor to Citizen to be discussed from the perspective of Bourdieu’s field theory. Therefore,to explore main reasons with the hot selling of From Emperor to Citizen, this thesis, based on the core concept of "field" in Bourdieu’s theory, attempts to investigate the interaction among the agents(the author, the publisher, the translator and readers)and the relationship between the agents and the field in From Emperor to Citizen. The research may help more excellent Chinese literary works to play a positive role with the aid of field movement rules so as to integrate into overseas literary fields. The research results are as follows: The hot selling of From Emperor to Citizen mainly depends on the accumulation, inheritance and transmission of capital by the agents in the field,as well as the correct exertion of their own capital and habitus. These actions have promoted the field to gain good benefits and reputation, and overcome the negative effects such as the destruction of market economic order. At the same time, these benefits and reputations react on the agents in the field, making them obtain more economic capital, symbolic capital, etc.,thus enable them to get closer to the central position of the field to accumulate capital again, and then exert capital and habitus. The repeated effects of the above factors have promoted the prosperity and development of the field of From Emperor to Citizen, and kept moving on and on in this beneficial cycle.By using qualitative research methods such as close reading of texts, the thesis analyzes the reason why From Emperor to Citizen is still popular after more than half a century with field theory, which has certain theoretical and practical significance.
