This thesis, based on the translation practice of Lin Qingxian's The Real Taste of Life The Peace of Mind and Innermost Contentment, explores the instructive significance of semantic translation and communicative translation in the CE translation of prose. As Lin's first prose collection on the reflection of life,it encourages people to be a simple person in the complicated world and live a leisurely life with a peace of mind.Semantic translation and communicative translation are proposed by Newmark, and he advocates that all translations are the combination of communicative translation and semantic translation to some extent, but their emphasis is different. Therefore, the flexible combination of semantic translation and communicative translation can greatly improve the translation quality of prose. This thesis analyzes the translation of this prose collection at three levels. At lexical level,it is mainly about the translation of culture-loaded expressions and four-character idioms. The author adopts omission, annotation, etc.to convey the content of the source text and its cultural connotations. At syntactic level,Chinese prose is characterized by sentences of loose and long structures and non-subject sentences.Various methods are adopted to make the source text conform to ways of expression in target language. At stylistic level, for the translation of rhetoric and quotations of poem, the author adopts the methods of corresponding, recasting, decolouring and direct reference, striving to maximally reproduce the style and artistic conception of the source text. The author hopes the translation study of Lin's prose collection can provide some enlightenment for prose translation.
