Shu Yi is an overseas literature of Shang Shu.It was written at the end of Lee's Korea kingdom and regarded Ding Ruoyong(1762-1836),the Korean great Confucian scholar,as its writer.Actually,it is not clear about its real writer who might be a conservative scholar truly believing in neo-confucianism at the later stage of Joseon dynasty according to the content of the book. From the aspects of the annotation content, this book elucidates the doctrine of Shang Shu and it is a book full of philosophical connotations;from the aspects of annotation style, combining parallel sentences with loose sentences and with detail narrations and repetitions, this book endows with the purpose of taking imperial examinations. The manuscript copy and photocopy of Shu Yi,with more than 200,000 words, are preserved in the Kyujanggak Archives in Seoul,Korea. The collated version has not been found now.Shu Yi selects 1013 words and phrases from Shang Shu(including both ancient words and modern words)and annotates and expands with constant length and form. The ideological basis of expanding is local Confucianism—neo-confucianism formed after Cheng-Zhu Confucianism had been spread to the Korean Peninsula.Neo-confucianism involves the abilities of the king, principles and virtues, moral quality, the law of ancestors, ways to learn and othersAlthough Shu Yi is a connotation book,it is closely related to exegeses. So,through explanatory text, the annotation content can be divided into annotating the meaning of words, paraphrasing general idea and elucidating philosophical connotations. These three annotation contents are not completely separate but integrate together. The meanings of words appear following that of phrases and the meanings of phrases are shown by the sentences. The words and phrases form the sentences which express philosophical connotations, forming the quite unique style of exegeses.Through analyzing the exegesis ways and form of writing,it can be seen that the writer of Shu Yi creates his own exegesis rules. If directly stating meaning belongs to traditional exegesis ways, then emphasizing contextual meaning and explaining through tropes and analogies show the characteristics of Shu Yi.Similar structure, parallel and loose sentences and the writing style of emphasizing detail narration even demonstrate the strong annotation style. On the one hand,Shu Yi obviously absorb Chinese traditional exegesis ways.It quotes 295 books and 350 points of and before Han dynasty as evidences to explain scriptures, which shows the empirical style;on the other hand,it doesn't rigidly adhere to traditions, pays close attention to contextual meaning in the process of annotation and emphasizes the unity of textual structure in writing, which can be called a beneficial try. However, things have two sides. These two advantages mentioned above bring some disadvantages including errors in excessive quotations and sundry repetitions in orderly writing.
