Auxiliary verbs are a common part of speech in Chinese, and the research on them has been started since the so-called "auxiliary words" in Ma Shi Wen Tong. However, there have been many different views on the name, classification, function, relationship with other parts of speech, membership and number of auxiliary verbs."De yi" is a controversial word, whose lexical attributes have not reached a consistent conclusion up to now, unlike "ke yi,neng gou" which is a recognized auxiliary verb, and whose syntactic and semantic characteristics have not been elaborated in detail. Therefore,it is necessary to make a further investigation.According to the prototype theory, this paper regards it as an auxiliary verb, takes modern Chinese "de yi" as the research object and through corpus analysis, describes and explains it in detail from synchronic and diachronic levels. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly contains three aspects:the research status, the research contents and significance, the research methods specified in this paper and the sources of corpus. The second part is the core of this paper, including the second, third and fourth chapters. The second chapter aims to examine the characteristics of "de yi" from three perspectives:exterior form, interior meaning, pragmatic values, and to determine its syntactic combination form, paraphrase and pragmatic value. The third chapter analyzes the development track of "de yi" from Zhou Dynasty,Spring and Autumn Warring States Period,Han Dynasty,Six Dynasties to the Qing Dynasty, and explores the formation of"de yi" and its influence on its usage in modern Chinese. The fourth chapter is to make a synonymic analysis of the difference between "de yi" and "ke yi".The third part is the conclusion, sums up the main points and points out some shortcomings of the paper.
