Preliminary Study On Transworld Identity Of Individuals

The identity of individual is one of the core issues under the branch of modal philosophy.It is not only related to our interpretation of ontological status of possible worlds,but also to our epistemological problems across the worlds,and even to the understanding of modality itself.In this question,one holding different modal attitudes will have different answers.In the context of possible worlds semantics which has the highest acceptance today,it is difficult to avoid the transworld identity of individuals in any philosophical interpretation of possible worlds and even modality itself.The general content of this paper is as follows:Chapter one is the introduction part.This chapter will introduce the background and research significance of this problem.At the same time it will examine the current research situation at home and abroad on this problem.After that,this chapter gives the writing ideas,innovations and shortcomings of this paper.Chapter two introduces what is transworld identity of individuals.This chapter briefly introduces the history of modal logic.At the same time,the core idea and main content of the possible world semantics are given,and the philosophical origin and technical background of the problem are clarified.At the same time,I will focus on the study of the inevitability and reality of this problem.Respect for the tansworld identity problem is the basic respect for the quantitative modal logic.The transwolrd identity of individuals is concerned not only with the individual itself,but also with the connection between different possible worlds.Chapter three will introduce the various philosophical disputes arising from this issue from the standpoint of recognizing transworld identity of individuals.It mainly involves Leibniz law,Chisholm paradox and bare identity.In my opinion,except for Leibniz law,other two difficulties are both intractable.Through analysis,it demonstrates that these paradoxes will be very hard to get real solutions from structural and formal adjustments by avoiding essential attributes.This will guide us to go deep into the study of attributes and essence of individuals.Chapter four will introduce the solution of essentialism.This Chapter will introduce two mainstream essentialism theories:the original essentialism and the sortal essentialism.In my opinion,for admitting origin as the essential attribute of individuals,it is necessary to clarify what the origin is first,otherwise it is hard to be persuasive enough.Correspondingly,I am more in favor of the sortals as the essential attribute of individuals.Sortal essentialism can provide reference and restriction for transworld identity of individuals,so as to help us understand transworld identity of individuals.Before that,this chapter will first discuss what is the essential attribute and give two different kinds of essential attributes.It will also defend the rationality of essentialism.Last,I will give my own summary comments.First of all,in my opinion,to solve the problem of transworld identity,essentialism is inevitable.However,the modal path of describing essences is not sufficient,and it can only partially show the real face of the essence.So we can’t solve the problem perfectly.At the same time,I believe that Kripke semantics will inevitably lead to the separation between individual attributes and individual existence,which is the root cause of various philosophical difficulties for transworld identity of individuals.I will give a possible consideration direction.
