The present report is an E-C translation of the selected parts from a stream-of-consciousness novel called Winter by the famous British novelist Ali Smith.Set against the backdrop of the complicated thinking of the Breixt,Donald Trump’s coming to power,the anti-globalization and the development of the Internet,it is a novel of loose construct and of distinct characteristics.In addition,it is also the second of Ali Smith’s tetralogy of seasons,the first Autumn among which had won widespread attention upon published and also a finalist for the Man Booker Prize in 2017.Therefore,translation of such a novel not only offers the Chinese readers excellent reading materials,but also provides a fresh perspective for those who are interested in current affairs,that is,how native British writers view issues such as Brexit,anti-globalization and environment protection.The essence of translation as re-narration shows the inseparable connection between translation and narration.Narratology provides a new viewpoint for translation theory and practice,including the analysis of semantics,pragmatics,the discourse of text,and the analysis of narrative structure,thus giving consideration to both macro-and microscopic aspects of novel translation.In the source text the writer applies a great deal of narrative techniques thereof show the readers attractive plots,thus the author of this report will not only convey the ideas of the source text to the target readers faithfully,but reproduce the narrative styles through proper translation strategies.To sum up,the present report discusses how to analyze Winter from the perspective of narrative point of view,narrative speech and narrative time in light of narratology,and analyzes the difficulties in translating the novel to put forward some suggestions on the translation strategies and methods as well as techniques can be used in the translation of stream-of-consciousness novel.As a result,the present author reproduces the narrative features in Winter and explores the applicability of narratology in stream-of-consciousness novel translation in light of narratology and may shed some useful light into and offer helpful reference for the unifying of translation criteria in this kind of novel.Furthermore,through the translation practice,the present author’s competence and appreciation for stream-of-consciousness or even all the novels has also been enhanced significantly. |
