With the continuous innovation and development of translation technology, the mode of post-editing emerges as a response to the requirements of the times.Compared with the traditional human translation mode,post-editing mode has many incomparable advantages, such as high efficiency and accuracy.Popular science text is a branch of science and technology text, which is the combination of literature and science.Because the function of popular science texts is to popularize scientific and technological knowledge, popular science texts are not only scientific and literary, but also popular and interesting.Due to the fact that popular science texts often combine science and popularity,it is difficult to translate them well.In this context, the author designs an empirical experiment to explore the efficiency difference between the modes of human translation(HT)and post-editing(PE)in the translation of popular science texts. The source text of this experiment is selected from The Secret Life of Periodic Table(a representative of popular science texts). When comparing the differences in translating efficiency, the author chooses two indicators: productivity and translation quality.Specifically, the author evaluates the productivity by calculating the number of translated words per unit time of the subjects, and the author evaluates the translation quality under the two translation modes by using the manual evaluation metric,i.e.,LISA QA model. In addition, through this experiment, the author also explores the factors that influence the performance of the subjects under two translation modes.Through this experiment, the author finds that during the translation of the same popular science text, the translation efficiency of PE mode is higher than that of HT mode.In this study, the author adopts a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to compare the efficiency of the two translation modes in the translation of popular science texts. This case study can provide some experience and reference for the translation of popular science texts in the future, improve the translation efficiency of popular science texts to a certain extent, and promote the innovation and development of a mode of post-editing combined with popular science text translation.
