Study On The Factors Affecting The Music Preference Of Non-music Majors'college Students

Music preference has always been a heated tropic,and the factors that influence music preference are extremely difficult and complex subjects.Personality has been playing a critical role in the process of psychological development of human beings.Within this process,plenty of different personality models emerged.This thesis is to discuss and analyze Type D personality which is raised by Denollet in 1996.It is easy to get negative emotions such as anxiety,irritability,antagonism and impatience if people belong to this type of personality.In the meantime,these people pay much attention to the dark side of human beings and environment around,so that they would feel unsafe and social-anxious.Therefore,it is highly risky for Type D personality to suffer from depression and angiocardiopathy.It is widely confirmed that personality has strong impact on music preference.However,there are few researches connecting Type D personality and music preference.Psychological intervention and emotion regulation of Type D personality is actually very necessary because this personality could easily create many diseases under negative emotions.This article is trying to explore the music genre which Type D personality prefers,generally comprehend the mechanism of emotion regulation of Type D personality,relieve their social-anxiety and negative moods through music,and reduce the risk suffering from angiocardiopathy and other diseases from the perspective of music preference.The respondents of this article are the university students,whose majors have no connection with music,from five universities including Central China Normal University and Wuhan University.There are 279 valid questionnaires collected as raw data collection is a main method of investigation,and then analyzed by SPSS 25.0,turns out that gender,university professional,music learning experience and Type D personality all have influence on music preference.More specifically,(1)Male prefer country music,oldies,and rock music much better than that of female,yet female love pop,folk and hip-pop music much more than male do;(2)Regarding to western classic music,Blues,folk,Jazz,Chinese national music,Opera and OST/theme songs,the preference of those who have music-learning background is stronger than the people who have no music background;(3)There are significant differences among pop music,Blues,folk,country music,traditional opera,Chinese national music and hip-pop/rap music;(4)Type D personality prefers electronica and rock music compared with other personality types,but shows contrary preference on Blues and folk music.This thesis is composed by six chapters,including introduction,literature review,research approaches,research result,conclusion,limitations and future studies.Research background,significance,objective and main questions will be raised in introduction through study and analysis of different literatures.Literature review includes concept definition,theoretical foundation,and research status both at home and aboard.Research approaches chapter illustrates research targets,questionnaires which been used to collect raw data,validity test of measurement tools and research process.As the research result,variance analysis will be used within four dimensions-gender,university professional,music learning experience and Type D personality.Analysis and summary of research result will be included in Conclusion chapter.This article will also raise limitations and expectations revolving around Type D personality and music preference in the last section.
