A Report On The E-C Translation Of Soccer News In Washington Post From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Since the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games that greatly promoted international exchange,Sports English began to arouse domestic attention.As a practical style in non-literary fields,Sports English has its unique characteristics and principles.With the increasing international interactions among the sports field,the demand for a quality translation is constantly rising.Translators are required to have a deeper understanding of Sports English in order to strengthen their skills and improve the quality of their work.Soccer news is one of the most comprehensive and typical sub-section of this area and also the largest item in Sports news.It is also one of the most common supporters of Sports English because it tends to be interesting and popular in content and fluent in language.Considering this,translators not only need to refine their versions of translation to cater to the preferences of football fans,but also to ensure the accurate expressions of information and high efficiency of news transmission.The core of Skopos Theory is that "the purpose of translation justifies the process",which means,in the case of sports news translation,the translation of soccer language should primarily satisfy the translator's full consideration of the purpose of serving readers and authors.Here,the Skopos Theory is applied to further research translation strategies related to soccer news that can satisfy the readers' needs and achieve the author's purpose.Soccer news reported on Washington Post,one of the most influential American presses,was used as the main source of materials for the translation and the analysis of this report.The Skopos Theory was applied to analyze the E-C translation strategy of soccer news with four translation strategies for long and difficult sentences,from lexical to syntactic level in order to test the effectiveness of the aforementioned main purpose on this subject.This report is divided into five chapters,namely introduction of translation task,the theoretical basis,translation procedure,theory application of Skopos Theory and conclusion.For the translation of soccer news,the author mainly analyzes from the lexical level to the syntactic level.At the lexical level,three directions are discussed---names,terms and proper nouns,and idioms.When it comes to the syntactic level,four translation strategies are applied for complex sentences---cutting,reversing,splitting-off and recasting.The appliance of Skopos theory in translation practice is also included in strategy setting.This report not only analyzes the latest material of the translation of soccer news,but also gives a supplement to the practical appliance of Sport English.
