| As an essential means of international communication, news English is an important means for raising a country’s national status and influences in the world. It also serves to promote the development of national culture. If we can translate it successfully, we can not only enhance mutual understandings between different countries and remove language barriers, but also benefit economic and cultural cooperation between nations and races.This thesis discusses news English translation on the basis of skopos theory. As a breakthrough with the traditional equivalence-oriented approaches, Skopos theory has offered a new perspective to translation studies. Based on skopos theory, translation is a purposeful intercultural action and the specific translation skopos will decide the translation strategies or methods. In the process of translation, the translation is conditioned by many factors. In order to achieve the purpose of translation, the translator should grasp the intention of the source text to choose the proper translation strategies according to the intended function of different types of the texts. The author introduces the theories put forward by German translation masters:such as the three rules offered by Hans J. Vermeer, namely, the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, and the theory of translational action by Justa Holz-Manttari and the principle of function plus loyalty by Christiane Nord.Based upon the above theories, the thesis focuses on a specific type of news translation-English war news with especial purpose and character. Six chapters comprise this thesis:Chapter One gives a brief introduction about the thesis, including the significance of skopos theory in news English translation. The author focuses on the war news English translation, research background and the framework of the thesis.Chapter Two expounds the basic concepts and the main content of skopos theory, and reviews the process of skopos theory development.Chapter Three is about the influence of news in people’s daily life and its features. It gives the definition, classification and styles of news, basic elements, values and functions of news. According to these basic concepts, a general understanding of the translation of news English is provided.Chapter Four lists the factors influencing news translation. As war news English is a special genre of news English, this chapter tries to analyze and dig out the purposes and motives about war news English translation, including the differences of ideology, culture and language in English and Chinese, and then translators, who decide on what skills and methods are to be used by taking these factors into consideration.Chapter Five is mainly a verification of how these rules of skopos theory function are applied in English war news translation and how the translator uses some English news translation approaches by skopos theory served as an optional theoretical guidance. Such as adaptation, abridgment, appropriate amplification and explanation.The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis and limitation of skopos theory application in news English translation. Skopos theory is with great practical value but it puts too much emphasis on translator’s subjectivity, which may lead to a perceived danger of oversimplification or a possible bias towards a particular translation strategy. The thesis is hoping to make some due contribution to possible future research. |
