Language Features And Translation Of English And Chinese Soccer News

Soccer is viewed in the world as the prime sport that makes billions of peoplecrazy and addicted to it. China boasts the largest number of soccer fans in the worldwhere sports report is virtually dominated by soccer-related news either in Chinese orin English—a key source of information for soccer fans in China at present.Due to its time-honored history and unique perspective, a great amount ofEnglish soccer news has been translated into Chinese to enrich the Chinese soccernews. At the same time, as a soccer developing country, China needs to boost its fameand publicity. Therefore, it is inevitable to improve the quality and increase thequantity of China’s soccer news for international publicity.At present, newspaper English has been studied in a deep-going way, but rarelyon sports news. The existing study on sports news, if there is, is mostly concentratedon one language. As to the study on soccer news English, little can be found in thisfield. In this thesis, the author attempts to find out how soccer news in English andChinese can learn from each other and benefit each other by comparative studybetween them. Meanwhile, by applying some related translation theories, such as theskopos theory and the “three closeness” principle in publicity-orientedChinese-English translation, the author expects that soccer news translation can bethus improved so that more people can be motivated to enjoy and take part in thisfascinating sport.The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is the introductory part, inwhich the author presents the background and significance of the research. Chaptertwo illustrates and compares Chinese and English soccer news respectively in termsof lexis, rhetorical devices, and language style. Chapter three first introduces the related translation theories and principles, and then the author puts forward thetranslation methods for E-C soccer news translation and then analyzes the Englishtranslation of Chinese soccer news. The concluding chapter is a retrospective of thewhole thesis, the limitations of the thesis and some suggestions about doing theresearch in the future.
