Performed Culture Approach is a second language teaching method which integrates language,culture and communication.According to this method,language and culture are intertwined,and teaching involving experience and practice can help learners construct foreign cultural memory and develop their ability to participate in the cultural community of the target language.This pedagogy provides a new perspective for teaching Chinese to foreign students at the beginning level.This paper discusses the applicability of performed cultural approach in beginning Chinese language teaching.This method has several advantages for teaching Chinese to beginners.First of all,it can enliven the classroom atmosphere and improve the listening and speaking ability of international students;secondly,performance-based teaching can effectively facilitate interactions and provide timely teaching feedback;thirdly,teaching contextualized in real-life scenarios can enhance the practical use of Chinese of international students;fourthly,the teaching modes of "listening and speaking+ reading and writing" and "separate Chinese" improve the teaching efficiency;Fifthly,the focus on Chinese ways of thinking and cultural perspectives can help international students overcome cultural barriers and conduct effective cross-cultural communication.Despite the above merits,there are some barriers in the effective application of performed cultural approach.The lack of Chinese cultural and behavioral standards poses a higher demand on teachers' professional quality.In addition,the negative transfer of native language in studying Chinese sentence structures and overgeneralization of grammar rules are salient.In the speaking test,students did not understand the task arrangement in time,and the scene switching was not coordinated.The reading and writing class lacked the importance of the students' Chinese character writing training.The writing test ignored the assessment and scoring of the correctness of Chinese character writing.As a response,suggestions for improvement are proposed in this article.In terms of curriculum design,developing Chinese cultural and behavioral standards,textbooks and teaching materials based on performed cultural approach,are needed as well as a better training of teachers.In the teaching practice,a comparative study of native language grammar and sentence structures in Chinese should be adopted.Reserved for a period of time in each lesson to take the new words in the text as an example to explain radicals,component structure and guide students to write.Every two units conduct a systematic review of Chinese character learning.Improve the use of props for oral exams to make them more visual.The writing test should include the correctness of key new word writing in the scoring range,causing students to pay attention to Chinese character learning.
