Teaching of English reading is vital to English teaching.In traditional teaching of English reading teachers stress and explain English words and grammar in the way of ignoring the text.However,General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards contains the types and content of discourse and it also proposes three levels of students' understanding of discourse.Therefore,it is necessary and worthwhile to introduce discourse analysis into teaching of English reading in senior high school.The subjects of this study are students who are selected from Ansai senior high school.The study is based on the theory of text pattern and the discourse cohesion.The instruments are the questionnaire of students' habits of using discourse analysis while doing English reading,a teaching experiment and two reading tests.After distributing questionnaires,collecting questionnaires and English testing scores,the data is firstly sorted out,collated and finally analyzed by Excel,the papers' grading platform of the senior high school and SPSS.The result shows that the teaching of English reading based on discourse analysis is helpful to develop students' habit of using discourse analysis in English reading.Meanwhile it is also beneficial to improving students' reading ability.In conclusion,the study suggests that teachers should insist on enhancing their own knowledge of discourse analysis and help students make full use of text patterns and the genre of the text to analyse the structure and the main idea of the passage.In addition,they should also persist using discourse cohesion to help students get a better understanding of the passage.Finally,the teaching of English reading based on the discourse analysis will be improved.
