| The debate on whether benevolence and righteousness are inherent was a popular topic in the pre-Qin period.Mencius opposed the viewpoint of "righteousness is outward" when talking to Gaozi,thus declaring his own view that "righteousness is inherent".The "righteousness" put forward by Mencius is an important proposition in Mencius’ study of mind and nature,but it is not a new point of view,and it has many ideological origins to be traced back to.As a well-known proposition of "righteousness is inherent" in the Mind theory of Mencius,most of them are interpreted by scholars in a metaphysical way,that is,from the transcendental ontological approach,and the proposition of "righteousness is inherent" is regarded as the explanations of Mencius’ theory of virtuous humanity.However,by facing up to the linguistic environment put forward by the proposition of "righteousness",that is,the "he debate on whether benevolence and righteousness are inherent" between Mencius and Gaozi,we can see that this debate is actually a verbal dispute between the two different consciousness of problem.Gaozi said "righteousness is outward" actually means that the behavior of "righteousness" depends on the relationship between the external object and the "I",while Mencius said "righteousness is inherent" with a consciousness of the Kungfu theory is wanted to show that moral behavior depends on subjective will.Therefore Mencius said that the "righteousness is inherent" should actually belong to the content of his theory of psychological Kungfu.In addition,the discussion of the good and evil of human nature in the context of the other debates between the two can reflect not only the difference in the validity of the differences between the two views in the debate here,but also "inside" and "outside" have a deeper meaning in this debate.The"righteousness"was put forward along the way of psychological Kungfu theory,and the theory has two aspects:Ontology and Kungfu.In addition,it has a deep and internal relationship with Mencius’other Kungfu theory.In fact,the wholeappearance of Mencius’thought of"righteousness"is relatively complete in the connection with a series of time theories,such as“shang zhi(尚志built up an ambitiom)","cao cun she wang(操存舍亡practice will lead to gain,but not practice will lead to loss","hao ran zheng qi(浩然正气,awe-inspiring righteousness)","jian xing(践形realize one’s self-shape)"and so on.Mencius’thought of"righteousness",which takes the theory of Kungfu as the way,has a great influence on the theoretical development of Confucianism itself,and it is constantly emphasized and brought into play by Confucianism in later generations. |
