A Report On The Translation Of The Parts Of X Automotive Maintenance Manual

X Automotive Maintenance Manual written for the X vehicle aims to make the users know the basic knowledge about maintenance.It is considered as a reference for technicians to prepare relevant accessories based on listed parameters so as to facilitate the maintenance and operation.This paper is a report on the Chinese-English translation of the parts of X Automotive Maintenance Manual.The source text focuses on the communicative effects of information with strong practicality as a typical informative text.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory,this translation project employs practical translation strategies to achieve the goals of information exchange and make audiences better understand the source text in line with text characteristics.This translation report has five parts.The first part is task description,chiefly introducing the project X Automotive Maintenance Manual for its background and significance.The second part mainly focuses on the translation process,embracing preparations for pre-translation that are text analysis and selection of translation tools;internal activities such as understanding,shifting and expressing while translation;proofreading and referring to parallel texts for quality control in post-translation.Then,the third part gives an introduction of communicative translation theory,chiefly about its content,development and application.And the fourth part is about translation strategies including literal translation,free translation,amplification,conversion,combination and reversing.In addition,it enumerates some specific cases in the source text to illustrate the communicative effects on Chinese-English translation.Last,the fifth part is the conclusion of the translation including findings of the translation and suggestions during the translation process.During the research process of this project,it has been found that the language is concise,objective and professional and the content tends to be communicative,instructive and legible according to the analysis of the characteristics of the source text.In order to convey the information precisely and be faithful to the content to meet audiences' demands,the communicative translation theory is applied to guide text translation and sum up specific translation strategies.And on the basis of conforming to the text characteristics,the translation is expected to achieve desired results.Meanwhile,this project is desired to provide valuable references for practitioners and relative enterprises in the automotive field,as well as technicians and users.
