A Translation Strategy Study Of Chinese Maintenance Manual Of Vietnam Haiphong Chinese-english Translation Project

With the intensified globalization at a rapid rate, world-wide exchanges ofnational and cultural resources have been promoted. Translation is a bridge forcross-cultural communication, while EST (English for Science and Technology)translation plays an important role for economic exchanges in the fast-developingsociety. As China has shown much more strength to the world, it has become animperative task to introduce the advanced technology abroad. When translatingChinese technical material into English, translators are required to be equipped withprofessional knowledge and good at using various translation strategies. What s more,in modern society, as Internet and computer are frequently used to facilitate theexchange of information, translators shall integrate all the resource on hand with theestablished wisdom to effectively finish the translation task.This is a translation report for Maintenance Manual of Vietnam Haiphong Ⅱ (2300MW) Thermal Power Plant Project. The original text is Chinese maintenancemanual, covering Boiler, Turbine, Electricity, Chemistry, Fuel, Desulfurization and I&C (Instrument and Control). The selected translation is part of Electricity and Fuelwith over17,000Chinese words in total.This report includes five parts. Part one is the introduction of the translationproject and the overview of the report. Part two focuses on the preparation beforetranslation, including text analysis, parallel text preparation and task analysis. Partthree is the translation process description, covering the management of thetranslation project, main translation criteria and the translation tools used in theproject. Part four emphasizes the C-E (Chinese-English) translation techniques. Partfive is the project summary, containing the feedbacks, translation experience,conclusion and suggestions.Demonstrating the whole process of completing a big translation project withmulti-method, the author hopes to show a comprehensive way of translating a Chinesemaintenance manual and focuses on the strategies of C-E technical translation. Apartfrom the general criteria like accuracy and smoothness, there are many translation theories that are practical and feasible for translator when completing an appliedtranslation task, for example, Christiane Nord s text analysis mode from Germanyfunctional school and the parallel text comparison mode from discourse analysislinguistics. In addition, as translation has become an industry in social market, manyCAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools are used to raise time efficiency andimprove translation quality.The author tries to show a solution to effectively and successfully complete atranslation project combining various tools and methods, what s more important, toset a proper reference for the translation strategies of Chinese science and technologymaterial, especially for that of Chinese maintenance manual. The author also hopes topromote certain review and offer reference for completing a translation project.
