| There have always been many differences between Chinese and western cultures,but the exchanges between these two cultures have never been stopped.In old age,many foreign envoys made pilgrimages to China and marveled at Chinese great civilization;then the advanced western industrial civilization made the declining imperial China succumb;gradually,more and more countries built diplomatic relations with the newly established China.Countless Chinese and foreign scholars have worked diligently for studying excellent cultures from different countries.The source text of this translation activity is Fathoming the Cosmos and Ordering the World: The Yijing(I-Ching,or Classic of Changes)and Its Evolution in China composed by Richard J.Smith.This report will analyze the translation activity according to functional equivalence theory from Eugene Nida,put forward some translation focuses and difficulties,and state some personal opinions.This thesis also mentions Nida's famous translation steps,namely analysis,transformation,recombination and test,in the hope of providing some help to the forthcoming translation analysis and practice.In addition,this thesis consist of five parts: task analysis,translation process analysis,theoretical analysis,case analysis and practical summary.It mainly discusses what Nida's functional equivalence theory is and what translation techniques can be utilized to achieve lexical equivalence,sentence equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.The final conclusion is that the equivalence is not just a word-for-wordcorrespondence,but the equivalence of meaning and function that translators should give attention to first. |
