Cittaslow Meizhou is a travelogue about the natural and cultural landscape of Meizhou.Taking Cittaslow Meizhou(excerpt)as the translation material, this translation report aims to study the difficulties and possible approaches in the English translation of a Chinese geographical travelogue at lexical and syntactic even textual level.Though both Chinese and English tourism texts have informative and vocative function, their writing styles and expressing ways differ.Absolutely faithful translation may lead to the misunderstandings for target readers and make the translation full of abundant information,so as to decrease the charm of the texts.Considering the different cultural background and aesthetic appreciation habits of target readers, the author takes Translation Variation Theory as guidance, using seven means to make the translation more acceptable for target readers.Translation Variation Theory aims to meet the specific needs of the target readers under specific conditions. It allows translators to play their subjectivity, making appropriate adjustments to the source text by means of addition, deletion, editing, narration, condensation, combination and adaptation. These means are of great help to improve the quality of tourism text translation. This translation report describes the process of the author's translation practice, reviews the development of Translation Variation Theory and explores how the translating means commonly used in this translation materials. The author has two major findings.Firstly, when wetranslate culture-loaded words or quotations of poems and local sayings, according to specific conditions,we could use addition to enrich its deeper meaning,or we could adopt deletion to make it concise,or we could use adaptation to optimize their content, form or style.Secondly, due to the different logic order between Chinese and English,we might use editing to reorganize the narrating order of the text.Through this report, the author hopes to provide some reference to future studies.
