Suspense movie is a movie genre where consistent suspense promotes plots narrative throughout the movie and the audience is drawn to focus on heroes’ destiny with tension and thrill.On the basis of suspense movie,this paper analyzes the psychology of audience engaged.Specifically,audience’s psychological effects and changes will be analyzed based on visual characteristics of suspense movies.Also artistic techniques and filming methods concerning strengthening the mental experience of audience will also be studied.Thus,this paper is trying to provide a prospective assistance for Chinese suspense movies in facilitating a virtuous cycle from being made to being received.Starting from the three perspectives regarding the psychology of target audience,ranging from incentives,consumption effects to creation codes,the present thesis conducts in-depth analysis,with specific suspense movies,about the viewers’ psychological preferences and motivation of choices during the movie.Under the guidance of Audience-Psychology-oriented creation methodology,the present thesis expounds on the proposal that a sound development momentum should be formed between suspense movie--the aesthetic subject,and audience--the aesthetic object.And this development momentum is excepted to pave a broader way for Chinese suspense movie and secure a more prosperous and ever-lasting future.The present thesis is divided into the following parts:The Introduction part first starts with the status quo of global suspense movie development,and analyzes the importance of audience psychology in suspense movie creation,based on theoretical and practical significance of this thesis and the Audience-Psychology-oriented mentality.Second,this part explains the research mentality and methods after reviewing literature on suspense movie study.Chapter One studies the incentives behind the audience of suspense movie in the aid of examples from specific film works,from the perspective of script features of suspense movie and habitual concern and curiosity of audience.In order to further exploring how creators should strike an orderly balance,with the help of script and audience,between the aesthetic subject and the aesthetic object under the mechanism of suspense psychology.Chapter Two focuses on the perspective of consumption effects of the target audience of suspense movie,expounds on detailed effects and causes regarding consumer psychology,such as Uses and Gratification,Fear and Anxiety,and Conformity Consumption,and provides the most straightforward psychological foundation for suspense movie creation,in the hope that artistic standards and aesthetic values can be promoted.Chapter Three explores and analyzes the proposal,from the perspective of the creation codes of audience psychology,that under theaudience-psychology-oriented context,the creation of suspense movie should lay emphasis on employing and justifying techniques in narrative,characterization and mise en scene,as well as taking the initiative to integrate itself into the mass discourse based on the premise of being in accordance with consumer psychology and drawing the audience to accept,in order to fulfill the role of publicizing mainstream values.The conclusion part,in view of the status quo of suspense movie,reflects on the challenges and potential risks in the practice of Chinese suspense movies in recent years,advocating that Chinese suspense movies should exploit the advantages in cultural values,for instance,to integrate psychological reflection and realistic criticism,and thus looks forward to the prospective development paths of domestic suspense movie.
