| Every year,large-scale factories in China import a great number of equipment,which is often supplied with the operating instructions manual in English.In order to accurately grasp the technical essentials and repair methods,translating English manuals is the priority for enterprises when debugging and maintaining machinery and equipment.The source of this translation project is the English version of Coreless Medium-frequency Furnace Description and Operating Instructions Manual.This type of practical texts is different from literary version in terms of linguistic features and translation methods.In addition,it has distinctive lexical,syntactic and textual features.Based on Reiss' s Text-type Theory,the author clarifies the linguistic and structural characteristics of the Instructions Manual,and explores the realization modes of these characteristics from the three strata of lexis,syntax and text.In accordance with the different lexical features and syntactic functions of Chinese and English texts of science and technology,the corresponding translation methods and strategies are selected from the textual stratus.With reference to the domestic translation practice research on operating instructions,and the experience of the project,the author explores how to achieve the maximum text function in this type of applied translation.The thesis provides some practical cases and unique ideas for the translation of equipment manuals in specialized fields.It not only solves the translation of scientific English,but tries to analyze the functionality and rationality of different sentence patterns in scientific Chinese,thereby figuring out the characteristics and differences of Chinese and English scientific texts. |
