The English-Chinese translation report is based on the translation of four EST articles chosen from Popular Science, covering human science, language acquisition and psychological cognition, virtual reality and mental health, and social humanities and urban issues. The language of the texts is formal, rigorous and standardized, and there are many long sentences with complicated structure. Therefore, the translation of such articles has its inherent language characteristics.Catford's Translation Shifts Theory focuses on microscopic phenomena in the language and guides translation practice in terms of grammatical units, sentence structure and so on.The author intends to use this theory to guide the translation practice and points out how to use this theory properly to solve the problems encountered in the translation of EST.The translation report consists of five parts. The first chapter is a description of the translation task, which mainly includes the task background, the meaning of the task and an introduction to the original texts. The second chapter is an introduction to the theory. It mainly introduces Catford and his Translation Shifts Theory, its development and study at home and abroad, its application value and defects;Chapter 3 describes the translation process, mainly including the preparation stage, formal translation stage and post-translation stage;Chapter 4is the application of the theory in the translation of EST texts;Chapter 5 is a summary of translation practice, which aims at the experiences and lessons learned in this translation practice, giving an overview and looking forward to the translation study and work in the future.
