This thesis investigates the Chinese and Mongolian toponyms in the administrative areas in Tongliao.Chinese toponyms in Tongliao usually assume the structure of "special name+ general name".The special name lexicon of Chinese toponyms comprises 6categories,including family/given name as special name, quantifier as special name, geographical environment depiction as special name, etc. The special name lexicon reflects not only the natural geography of administrative areas in Tongliao, but also the characteristics of its local people's life.Chinese toponyms possess rich syllabic structures, among which, the most frequent toponystructure is that of 3/4-syllables.The basic Chinese toponym construction comprise 3 types. In administrative areas of Tongliao, the categorization of the special/general name lexicon of Mongolian toponyms is largely the same as that of Chinese toponyms, except for a minor category in special name lexicon--"the reflection of Mongols' worship of numbers and colors".Mongolian toponym structures include special name + general name, special name only, noun of locality +special name, etc.,making 7 types in total.Word construction of Mongolian toponym has 2 types: Combination and Quantifier.Toponyms in administrative areas of Tongliao embody its rich culture. Both Chinese and Mogolian toponyms are closely associated to the local natural resources, migration of population, ethnic beliefs and symbolization of ethnic culture.By analysis of toponyms in administrative areas of Tongliao,we observed duplicates in toponyms and non-standard translation from Mongolian into Chinese. In addition,we came up with solutions to said problems. We hope this thesis could provide some reference to the standardization of the toponyms in administrative areas of Tongliao.
