This translation practice material is selected from chapters 1 and 2 of Fathoming the Cosmos and Ordering the World: The Yijing(I-Ching,or Classic of Changes)and Its Evolution in China, written by Rechard J.Smith, the famous American sinologist. The book has a worldwide influence on the study of the Yijing, and has not yet been translated into Chinese.Based on the characteristics of text and combining Newmark's semantic translation theory with communicative translation theory, this report makes an in-depth discussion on the difficulties encountered in dealing with translation practice. This report focuses on the specific analysis of register, the specific application of cohesion and coherence in discourse, and how to deal with the cultural differences between China and the west in specific texts from the perspective of semantic translation and communicative translation theory. In addition, various translation techniques such as amplification, omission, conversion, literal translation and free translation are applied to process the text. The theory of semantic translation provides an exotic perspective in the description of the translation of Chinese classics, while communicative translation theory can guide translators to better substitute cultural information of the target language.Semantic translation and communicative translation are both relative and identical. The organic combination of the two makes the translation of Chinese classics more accurate and readable, which enables the real communication and exchange of culture without borders.
