The First Encounter of The West With The Yijing is written by the German scholar,Claudia von Collani,which describes western missionaries' studies of Chinese classics in the 18 th century,especially the research on Yijing.Under the guidance of the translation principle--faithfulness and expressiveness,the author translates the first five chapters of the book,intending to improve her translation skills and draw attention of Chinese scholars who study early cultural communication between China and the western world to this book.Firstly,it introduces the source,significance and requirements of the translation project,and then analyzes the translation process including translation preparation,analysis of the source text and the revision after translation.Thirdly,it talks about the translation principles--faithfulness and expressiveness.Under the guidance of them,the report illustrates translation methods adopted in the specific context,for example,using literal translation,omission,amplification,inversion to translate complex sentences;using transliteration and parallel texts to translate missionaries' names and using free translation and amplification to translate cultural information.The supervisor,her colleagues and the author all believe that the translation work can meet the faithful and expressive requirements.At last,the author summarizes the whole work.Through this translation project,the author realizes that faithfulness and expressiveness are the basic principles of translation of cultural study books.Besides language ability and translation skills,a translator should improve his or her culture awareness in culture translation.
